Look, I know you meant well creating the world and all, but how could you let it get away from you like this? How come you couldn't stick with your original idea of paradise? People's lives were a mess.

About This Quote

In the original story of Eden, man was created by God and placed in a garden. In this version, our first parents were given a world full of happiness and pleasure. But, as soon as they ate from the tree of knowledge, they lost the joyous innocence that they once had and "entered into sorrow." In other words, they chose to live as mortals, as opposed to the immortal state that Adam and Eve were supposed to be in. This idea is very similar to Mary Shelley's classic Frankenstein , in which Victor Frankenstein creates a monster out of body parts.

The monster is supposed to be the antithesis of man: less intelligent and more animalistic than he himself is. However, one day the monster discovers that he has feelings and wants to be like man: "I began to feel life again. I began to dream dreams...to wish for what I had never had" (p.60).

The monster realizes that he has made a mistake by taking so much from man and he decides to undo what he has done. He shows great empathy for man even though he is still an "it". It seems that his only regret is that he could not have chosen a different path for himself because we all have free will and we can choose for ourselves what we do with it.

None of us are forced into action and we can always say "no" or forgive ourselves once we realize that we made a mistake.
